The Spectroscopies Service has obtained financing (FAS 2021) to purchase a new UV-Vis-NIR spectrophotometer (Jasco V-770) with a wavelength range of up to 3200 nm to replace the old damaged UV-Vis Cary 5 equipment.
The use of the service by external users has increased compared to last year, in all three service equipments (FT-IR, UV-Vis-NIR and EPR). The service has been involved in three publications in 2021.
PUBLICATIONS
During 2021, the Thermal Analysis Laboratory came back to the prepandemic statistic numbers, increasing the amount of external and internal services back to the usual ammount.
PUBLICATIONS
In 2021, there were more than 14 publication that used this service to get to their results.
PUBLICATIONS
Courses: “Técnicas de caracterización de materiales particulados”
Research projects: NANO-OLIGOMED, TAGSMARTLY, SPRINT4SPESIS, MOL4BIO, Phoenix, Micro4Nano, etc
Phd Thesis: Songbai Zhang and Judit Tomsen
PUBLICACIONS
The Electron Microscopy Service focuses on high-profile nanostructural characterization.
Equipment: Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), QUANTA FEI 200 FEG-ESEM, powerful imaging tool for material inspection. Transmission Electron Microscope, JEOL-JEM1210 is a 120 KV transmission electron microscope with a point to point resolution of 3.2 Å. The Optical microscope, OLYMPUS BX51, allows the easy switching between the methods of observation by transmission mode to reflection mode
PUBLICATIONS
The new Nanoquim Platform management programme became operational in 2021. This programme facilitates the management of Nanoquim, both in terms of statistics on the use of the room, equipment and type of users, as well as economic management.
In terms of security, there is also control of the users inside the room at all times. In addition, with this programme, it is easier and quicker for users to make reservations
Outreach activities:
Two Bachelor´s degree students who performed a three month long training stage attended the XRD Service in 2021.

The L-MBE is always operated in self-service mode backed up by the expert users, Dr. M. Garriga and Dr. M. I. Alonso. In 2021 most of the time (95%) the equipment was employed for tasks within the “Plasmionico” project led by Dr. A. R. Goñi, devoted to research of structures for harvesting infrared solar energy. The rest of the time was dedicated to other projects of the “NANOPTO” group related to thermal transport and photonic structures.
We have renewed one of our magnetometers. Now the laboratory offers the possibility to characterize the magnetic properties of samples with the new MPMS3 system from Quantum Design. The equipment offers an improvement on the measurement sensitivity in one order of magnitude: 10^-8 emu at low field, compared to the 10^-7 emu offered by the former MPMS-XL system.

The SPM Lab offers 2.300 hours yearly of SPM related experiments to people inside and outside the ICMAB, without including maintenance, development of new equipment, setups, calibration and implementation of new modes.
The ICMAB groups who use the service are:
The Bioservice Platform is open to the different research groups working in the area of biomaterials. The service caries out biological studies, both with cells and with bacteria, of the new materials and devices developed
